The old hierarchical structure of Wal-Mart had several problems. It encouraged close supervision of employees at every level but that did not produce improved productivity. In fact it was bad for the morale of the employees and increased the turnover of employees at Wal-Mart. The old hierarchical structure imposed close control over employees however, it did not encourage innovation and self-initiative. At Wal-Mart the new flat structure will lead to less supervision and a lower level of control over the employees but will encourage decentralization, initiative and self-control. In the new structure at Wal-Mart there will be lower level of control over employees but the employees will have greater flexibility.
