The Strategic Defense Imitative was proposed by US President Ronald Reagan to use ground based and space based systems to protect the United States from attack by strategic nuclear ballistic missiles. At the time these were passed by President Reagan, the plan was believed to be a desperate attempt to increase the sagging support for SDI. According to some estimates the cost of a full "Star Wars" program including laser beam weapons providing a space based shield from nuclear attack was estimated in 1987 to be more than $1 trillion.
