Today's legally astute managers recognize the need to protect their rights in intellectual property. Intellectual property is any property resulting from intellectual, creative processes—the products of an individual's mind. The information contained in books and computer files is intellectual property. The software you use, the movies you watch, and the music you listen to are all forms of intellectual property.

There are four basic types of intellectual property:
- Patents
- Copyrights
- Trademarks
- Trade secrets

Different types of intellectual property are protected in different ways and the protections apply to different aspects of a product.
