Ask Custom Question

Marketing research often starts with secondary research, examining what is already known that might shed some light on your research problem. This week's lesson and readings showed you a number of sources and ways to find secondary information. Do some secondary research using at least four different sources. Your sources should include reports from the U.S. Census, data you've analyzed using social media metrics, reports from industry sources or other databases or research institutions.

Briefly summarize each report and the key findings.
Provide a summary statement of the methodology used to collect the data in the study.
Describe what you learned from the study and how it is useful to your research.

Secondary Research
First source:
The first secondary source is the ER Inspector (ProPublica 2019), according to its report on Norton the patient pathways through the Norton Emergency Department are 4%. Patient pathways mean that after a patient reaches the emergency department, he is seen by a doctor or a medical assistant and then either sent home or is admitted to the hospital and taken to a room. However, some patients leave without being seen. At Norton the percent of patients that leave without being seen is 4% this is unsatisfactory because both the US average and Kentucky average are 2%. According to this report, the average time a patient spends in the emergency department before being sent home and not admitted is 2 hours 57 minutes. This is close to the US average of 2 hours 50 minutes. This report also says that the average time spent by a patient in the emergency room before being admitted to the hospital is 5hrs 35 minutes which is again close to the US average of 5hours 33 minutes. Moreover, the time taken by the hospital to transfer patients who are admitted from the emergency department to their rooms is 2 hours 19 minutes. This time is also close to the national average which is 2 hours 24 minutes. One of the most alarming data is that of CT scan. The percent of patients who arrived with stroke symptoms and did not receive CT scan results within 45 minutes is 59% which is more than double the national average of 27%. The methodology used by ER Inspector is to get data from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In the current study, the data was collected between October 2017 and October 2018.
What I learned and its usefulness:
What I learned from the study is that there are two areas where Norton is severely behind other emergency departments in the US and Kentucky. These areas are the percentage of patients who leave the hospital without being seen. This may mean that when patients are waiting to be admitted to the emergency department, the time between their arrival and when they are first attended to is very high. It can also mean that the waiting environment for emergency department patients is unfavorable, the inquiries being made by waiting patients are hastily answered causing apprehension, or there may be emergency departments of other hospitals nearby where the patients leave to get quick treatment. What I also learned from this study is that the percent of patients who arrived with stroke symptoms within 45 minutes is 59%! The stroke is such a serious condition that with every minute a patient waits the brain loses two million brain cells. If a patient has a stroke and is diagnosed as having an ischemic stroke he must be given an injection of tissue plasminogen activator as ...
