For this assignment, I will take the example of negotiation situation with one of my employees for salary. I run a research and advisory firm and regularly employ full time as well as freelance workers to work on various research projects.
In this particular scenario, I negotiated with an experienced business journalist and research to work on a longer term (1 year) research assignment for a business news portal. The assignment involved research and writing business news pertaining to specific topics on a daily basis for 1 year and possibly more.
I successfully negotiated the pricing, terms and conditions for the assignment with the freelance researcher after a series of negotiation related discussion.
As the task was quite mundane and ongoing and involved at least 4-5 hours of daily commitment, Monday to Friday, for the freelancer, he insisted on a fixed salary, irrespective of the volume of output at a higher rate than what I was offering. I proposed a more objective, per news item rate with conditions related to minimum commitment for output. The freelancer was adamant at first on the fixed salary, however, agreed to per news rate. However, he was still asking 25% more than the price offered by me by arguing on the fact that this is a mundane project and requires lot of time commitment.
To convince him, I highlighted the fact that this is a large freelancing opportunity with flexibility to work at home, ability to decide your own hours, weekly payout and consistent work flow, ...
