Generally speaking, there are 4 routes of drug administration: The oral route, parenteral route, topical route and the pulmonary route. Medications that are administered via the oral route and meant to be absorbed by the stomach and small intestines. It is the most commonly used route of administration as it is typically the safest and most convenient rote for the patient. Drugs administered orally typically have a slower onset (lag time) and a more prolonged, often less potent impact than drugs administered via the parenteral route. (BTW: parenteral means outside of the intestines)Drugs administered via this route typically are more readily absorbed and thus have a faster onset within the patient.
