Some common classes of anesthetic drugs include: propofol, morphine, meperidine, hydromorphone, fentanyl, sufentanil, and remifentanil.
What drugs are commonly used to anesthetize a patient undergoing abdominal surgery and why?
The most common type of drug used for anesthetization during abdominal surgery is propofol. Pentothal used to be a more common drug for abdominal surgery procedures, but has been replaced in recent years by propoful. It is used because it is able to quickly anesthetize the patient and also maintain the anesthesia. Studies have shown that it allows for a faster conscious recovery time compared to other anesthetic drugs. Also, it is not an analgesic so opiates can be used in conjunction with it. This is great for abdominal surgery patients because the experience can often be very painful.
What are the most common anticonvulsants or tranquilizers used to treat epileptic patients (drugs to prevent seizures)?
The older drugs that are used to treat epilepsy are: Dilantin or Phenytek, Phenobarbital, Tegretol or Carbatrol, Mysoline, Zarontin, Depakene, Depakote, Depakote ER, and Valium and similar tranquilizers such as Tranxene and Klonopin
The newer drug treatments are: Felbatol, Gabitril, Keppra, Lamictal, Lyrica, Neurontin, Topamax, Trileptal, and Zonegran
