Mendel worked with pea plants. His experimental results laid the foundation of the most important theory in biology that inherited traits pass on from generation to generation. It was concluded that, firstly, inheritance of each trait is determined by "units" or "factors" that are passed on to the offsprings unchanged; secondly, that an individual inherits one such unit from each parent for each trait; and finally, that a trait may not show up in an individual but can still be passed on to the next generation.
