    First, it is important to understand what stem cells are. I would recommend visiting the following website by the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the United States (this is the regulatory body that funds basic science research in the USA). Here you will find a good (and basic) overview of what stem cells are. (http://stemcells.nih.gov/)

    In brief: Stem cells are cells that have the potential to develop into other biological cells type and are also able to facilitate important repair processes in the body. What makes these cells especially unique is their ability to continually renew. With that in mind, stem cells are said to have 2 inherent properties 1) self renewal; and 2) potency (this is the ability to differentiate into other cell types).
