    1. Ingested salt will end up in the intestines. The intestinal lumen will become hypertonic compared to the cells lining the villi. Therefore, water will leave the tissues and enter the lumen. We would expect that eating a salty meal would, therefore, cause a slight dehydration in the body tissues, including both intracellular and extracellular fluids. For the most part, extracellular fluids will be depleted before intracellular fluids, since the sodium/potassium pump is still operating in the cells to maintain proper salt and water balance in the cells.
