Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of testosterone (male sex hormone). These are used with the thought of stimulating protein syntheses, causing an improvement in muscle size, strength, and body mass. Since testosterone is responsible for development and maturation of male secondary sex characteristics (body hair increase, masculine voice, libido, sperm production, aggressiveness, and male pattern baldness) anabolic steroids also have these androgenic effects.

Synthetic steroids are synthetic derivatives of hormones, which control metabolism, inflammation, body hydration balance, immune functions, and development of sexual characteristics. They are often anti-inflammatory and can be used to help arthritis, inflammation, and allergic shock.
