    That's an interesting question, but practically speaking the impetus for the creation of medieval cathedrals (the best examples of Gothic architecture) didn't really come from your average "folks."

    Rather it came from the Roman Catholic Church and wealthy nobles/kings, etc. Of course, your common person could donate money to the construction of cathedrals (in hopes of having sins erased) and they certainly provided the bulk of the labor.
