Rensis Likert was the first to develop a method for measuring attitudes. He created survey items which were statements or questions, followed by an indication of agreement or support i.e. 5) strongly agree 4) somewhat agree 3) no opinion 2) slightly disagree 1) strongly disagree. Surveys using Likert scales are a common form of research into attitudes or preferences.
