In the past decade, policies have included not-for-profit organizations for the administering of programs such as welfare or child protection services. What are the strengths and weaknesses of using this forum?
This is a very interesting question and area of study. If you can divorce yourself from the present and the rhetoric and emotion surrounding this issue it can be very helpful. Traditionally the government for the most part was unwilling or incapable of taking care of the poor and destitute. In American history we have numerous examples of non-profit organizations helping the underprivileged.
Many of the original colonists came to American for the express purpose of converting the Native Americans to Christianity. There are many examples of American colonists helping Native Americans with food and medicine especially in the years before open conflict between the two groups. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman provide a great example of missionary medical work among the Native Americans in the early 1800's.
