Sociology & Socialization
- Sociology is the social science that studies society, human behavior, social dynamics and interaction and culture related to everyday life. By understanding the mechanisms behind these, social scientists are able to develop a body of knowledge that can be used to explore and explain social order and social change as well as socialization.
- Socialization is the manner by which individuals learn and practice the norms and ideologies of society. Through socialization, individuals learn skills that allow them to find their place in their communities and survive in society. An individual is a social agent and is affected by varied elements & structures (schools, media, government, family, social groups, etc.). This experience impacts the socialization of the individual - their beliefs, world views, attitudes, cultural and social expertise and shape their personhood and ideas of self. As social agents, an individual also impacts the socialization of another, affecting change.

- To study society, sociologists employ sociological perspectives. 3 of the most utilised are the theories of structural functionalism, conflict theory and symbolic interactionism. Each of these theories come from a long tradition of social research and bring their own unique lenses in the study of social life and understanding of social phenomena (Lumen Learning, 2022).
