The Biopsychosocial Model
The term biopsychosocial hints at the inclusion of 3 considerations into the exploration, understanding and study of addiction - biology, psychology and sociology. Known also as BPS, it is based on an addiction theory of the same name and is explains that addiction (Adult Addictions Services Branch, Alcohol and Drug Services, 1996) and, "t substance misuse is the net result of a complex interaction between a combination of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual determinants." Dodes (2014) further explains as follows, "Biology, sociology, and psychology represent three separate pathways to understanding behavior, which may or may not overlap.
