Motivation theory encompasses a wide range of theories proposed by many people beginning in about the 1920s. These include incentive theories, drive theories, arousal theories and humanistic theories. Motivation can be defined as the force or reason why we behave or act as we do. Among Merriam Webster's definitions of "theory" includes "a plausible or scientifically acceptable general principle or body of principles offered to explain phenomena." One of the most widely known theories is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which in a very summarized way includes the assumption that humans need to have their basic survival and safety needs met in order for them to be permitted to develop social contacts, love, intimacy, and friendships, which in turn is needed before one can be "self-actualized" which includes morality, creativity, problem solving, among other qualities. Some important considerations in motivation theory include developmental factors, individual differences, and motivational changes. Motivational theory is a core concept in the field of psychology, and underlies most aspects of human behavior and development. Below are links to further information.
