Case Study - Sexual Discrimination

A group of young women have been working with the HR department to find ways of handling sexual discrimination at work. The company seems to preach one philosophy but implement another. Up to this point, the group has made some modest success, but now they want to discuss a setback when attempting to implement training for upper management within their organization. Here is a transcript of what discussed in this meeting.

Jesse: It seems like the company lets us only get so far. They seem to be OK with us having our little group and giving us time to meet, but I am starting to feel that they don't take us seriously.

April: I agree. As long as we so little tasks and mostly keep quiet, things are good. However, any time we try to bring up the issue of sexual discrimination at larger company level everyone clams up! Do they think that discrimination doesn't apply to management?

Sally: Last week, I brought up discrimination at our monthly team meeting and my manager said we didn't have time for this discussion and this was not the right venue. Honestly, he is one of the worst offenders. Since then, the atmosphere in the office has been different.

Jesse: I am starting to think that the company isn't really interested in taking care of women workers.

April: We are trying hard to work with the system and make real changes but we are starting to feel that our concerns are not important and I am honestly starting to question if there is a culture within this organization that supports discrimination.

Sally: What is something happens? Right now I don't feel comfortable that I could report this or that it would be handled correctly!
