Reframing as an operational definition that suggests taking a more global view of how society contributes to the individual and/or problems families encounter (Archer and McCarthy, 2007). During reframing, issues are addressed by providing another viewpoint to help clients to understand the problem differently. For example, as Archer and McCarthy note, a core goal for feminist counselors is to help clients come to understand how their problems may be reinforced in a societal context of gender bias. For instance, women are socialized to believe that they have to be thin to be attractive. This belief often leads to the development of eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa (anorexia).
