The initial interview is developed in efforts to establish rapport and generate flowing information. Once rapport has been established, the therapist and the client enter into a relationship to bring about a resolution of the problem. While the approach varies, the best approach to counseling is finding a theoretical approach that fits the specific problem (s) of the client. The counseling processing begins with the consent process-- that is obtaining the consent for the therapeutic intervention. Thus, the counselor/therapists would explain exactly what activities or tasks would be involved. Next, he or she should ensure the client of confidentiality. To begin the dialogue of counseling, the counselor would clarify the problem with the client. To do this, you set up a counseling schedule and explain how the process will proceed. In this way, the therapist/counselor can gradually come to an understanding of what will be involved during the counseling process. The next step in this initial phase of counseling is to listen to the client, as he or she communicates the problem.
