These concepts and definitions are both complex and controversial because not every one agrees to the definitions, and also because the terms, such as 'race' have historical biases inherent in the term.

'Culture' refers to the perspectives, practices and products of a social group, which often (but not always) includes aspects of 'sub-culture' and 'race'. From a social psychological perspective the definition is more inclusive; Culture is the total lifestyle of a people from a particular social grouping, including all the ideas, symbols, preferences, and material objects that they share.

From a social psychological perspective, subculture is also a social group, but one exhibiting a lifestyle sufficiently different to distinguish itself from others within the larger culture (http://www.richmond.edu/~allison/glossary.html). Similarly, in sociology, anthropology and cultural studies, for example, a subculture is a set of people with a set of behaviors and beliefs, culture, which could be distinct or hidden, that differentiate them from the larger culture to which they belong. If a systematic opposition to the dominant culture characterizes the sub-culture, then it may be described as a counterculture, according to some, but not all. along this line of thought, it is important to mention that there is a subtle difference between a counterculture and a subculture; a subculture is an at least somewhat integrated component of a society, though clearly separated, while a counterculture is actively and openly opposed to many of the characteristics of a society (http://www.answers.com/topic/race-1?cat=biz-fin).
