Can someone help me explain the relationship between sleep and stress, including any impact the relationship may have on stress hormones.

Stress is "an organism's response to a stressor such as an environmental condition or a stimulus" (Wikipedia, 2013, para 1). Sleep is a reoccurring unconscious state that all humans need to experience each day. "A good night's sleep is needed for physical and mental well-being, while poor sleep negatively affects nearly every aspect of a human being's life" (Patel, 2012, p. 1). Stress and sleep are correlated in that when an individual is experiencing high levels of stress, it is likely that they will sleep less and suffer from bouts of insomnia. The reverse is also true; when an individual is sleeping less or is getting inconsistent sleep, the likelihood of stress occurring is higher as the individual is less able to combat the side effects of stress on the body.
