As you briefly summarize samples of recent social issues in the news that reflect social psychology, the recent (and second) mass shooting and killing at Fort Hood this week demonstrates the severity of PTSD and violent manifestations, often from war veterans.

Sharon maintains that "Mental health experts who work with troops back from deployment talked this weekend about the latest efforts to treat disorders such as post-traumatic stress, efforts that are particularly relevant in light of the traumatic shootings at Fort Hood." The article stresses that "PTSD is a memory disorder, says David Riggs, executive director of the Center for Deployment Psychology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. "It's really that memory that folks carry around with them that gets stuck somewhere," he says. "The more tours you've done (and) the longer you spend there," the greater the likelihood for a trauma-related disorder, Riggs says."
