The three general research approaches to the study of personality are clinical, experimental, and correlational. For this discussion:

(1) Briefly describe the criteria for each of the research approaches: clinical, experimental, and correlational.

(a) Based on the experimental method, information is observed by following the rules and guidelines of the scientific method. The application of the scientific method takes place in a laboratory setting. The experiment is a procedure treatments and/or observations on the effects of a treatment; and analyzing the results using statistical procedures. These procedures based on the scientific method involve" (a) a hypothesis an educated guess regarding the outcome of specific phenomena, (b) identifying the variables (i.e., independent and dependent variables); (c) select subjects or targets, (d) assign to groups for testing, (e) manipulate the variables, (f) measure the variables effect, and (h) analyze the results using statistical procedures.

(b) The clinical method refers to information that was obtained from results that took place in a clinical setting. It could be data from interviews, mental examinations, medical reports, test results and/or evaluations, or diagnostic testing and assessment.
(c) The correlational method examines the relationship between two or more objects or events. Correlation helps to predict behavior, and although it does not indicate causation, correlation can relates indirectly to causation. Correlation indicates a strong or weak relationship between two variables (Mitchell & Jolley, 2005).
