On Teen Substance Abuse

According to the World Health Organization (2015), "Substance abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs. Psychoactive substance use can lead to dependence syndrome - a cluster of behavioural, cognitive, and physiological phenomena that develop after repeated substance use and that typically include a strong desire to take the drug, difficulties in controlling its use, persisting in its use despite harmful consequences, a higher priority given to drug use than to other activities and obligations, increased tolerance, and sometimes a physical withdrawal state." For adolescents in the US, the National Institute on Drug Abuse/NIDA (2015) reports that, "some children are already abusing drugs at age 12 or 13...Early abuse often includes such substances as tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, marijuana, and prescription drugs ... If drug abuse persists into later adolescence, abusers typically become more heavily involved with marijuana and then advance to other drugs, while continuing their abuse of tobacco and alcohol." The likely outcome then, especially those whose abuse are not intervened with, are wasted lives substance abuse lead to psychological, behavioral and biological complications preventing the individual from functioning normally and thriving in society.
