The first 5 years of a child's life are foundational to their being - how their brains work, their response to others, the environment, stress and how they relate to others in terms of building relationships are all impacted by, and arguably reliant upon, these first 5 years. According to the Urban Child Institute (2016), at this period, "the brain undergoes its most dramatic growth, setting the stage for social and emotional development. Language blossoms, basic motor abilities form, thinking becomes more complex, and children begin to understand their own feelings and those of others." The pace of growth is phenomenal as the child, born a social being, is exposed to his/her environment - the adults and other children with whom it interacts, its surroundings. The brain doubles in size reaching 80% of an adult's size by age three which means that the architecture of a child's brain both in 'hardware and software' are being established, allowing the child to communicate and learn skills that can help the child in establishing its needs and wants to those around him/her, impacting the child's cognitive, psychological/emotional and social outcomes for the rest of his/her life.
