Although it is a depression inventory, the BDI-II has a tendency to over-predict episodes of major depression, so caution should be used when using only this test to make that diagnosis (Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996). This test has been greatly improved upon over the years, and is considered much more reliable than its predecessors the BDI and the BDI-IA (Beck, et. al, 1996), but the test is still not free of all flaws, and may still not be perfectly free of all racial and gender bias.
