The halo effect is when the cognitive tendency is used to place particular traits on another person based on perceptions of a former trait. An example of the halo effect for children is the concept of good and evil in story books and children's movies. A beautiful girl such as Cinderella, or the handsome prince are perceived as being good; whereas, the stepmother, or the ugly stepsisters are perceived as being evil. The attractive characters in stories are generally depicted as trustworthy and honest, while those that are unattractive may be seen as the villain or a bad person (Kanazawa, 2004).

When a baby is born, the first thing people notice is the appearance of the baby, and most of the time, will comment on "how cute he is", or "how beautiful she is". According to Society for Research in Child Development Journal, 64% of parents believe that unattractive infants have significantly lower developmental skills, than those that are considered more attractive (Ritter, Casey, & Langlois, 1991).
