Sigmund Freud (1826-1939) was an Austrian thinker and neurologist who established the practice of psychoanalysis and whose name has become representative of psychological praxis. At its very root, psychoanalysis arose from Freud's work of treating the mental illness which impacts human thoughts and behavior and conversely explains it. For Freud, our childhood and our life experiences from an early age shape the way our personality develops so that a child who has experienced being bit by a dog for example may develop trauma and a phobia of dogs - the neurosis, a form of functional disorder characterized by anxiety, obsessions, compulsions and physical manifestations (need to run, to scream, to hide, etc.).
