Free recall is when someone is asked to recall a list, but can recall it in any order. Often the primacy and recency effects are demonstrated during free recall.
Cued recall is when someone is asked to remember things, and is cued with a reminder or "helped" to recall that item. A real life example may be in paired items from a grocery list. Perhaps you need both butter and bread at the store (or coffee and cream) and you first recall butter, and the recalling of butter cues the recall of bread. Likewise with coffee and cream; remembering one item will cue the other item of the pair.
