Learned helplessness is a phenomena where someone learns that they cannot avoid distress and so they cease trying to avoid it. There are several reasons why someone might give up trying to avoid distress. The individual may learn that they cannot control the circumstances (external control) or they see that their responses or efforts have no effect (attribution or belief about causality) (Abramson & Seligman, 1978).
