• The Six-Step Crisis Intervention Model

The six-step model consists of two phases: (1) the listening, and (b) action phase. The listening phase is divided into three components: (1) defining the problem, (2) ensuring client's safety, and (c) providing support (James, 2008). The six steps in the model include: (a) defining the problem, (b) ensuring client safety, (c) providing support. The action phase of the model includes: (d) examining alternatives, (e) making plans, and (f) obtaining commitments. First to define the problem the counselor is interested in what has caused the problem. Based on the model, to ensure client's safety indicates constantly assessing the possibility of" physical and/or psychological danger" to the client or others. In providing support, it is important that the counselor communicates to the client that he or she is cared about (Tedrick Parelick, & Watcher Morris, 2011).

Alternatives are examined from three possible perspectives. The first is supporting the individual to assess his or her situational support, including people known to the client in the present or past, or who might care about what happens to the client. Secondly, the clinician/counselor helps the client identify coping mechanisms or actions, behaviours, or environmental resources that can be used to cope with the present.
