Psychopathology in a dictionary definition is the, "The scientific study of mental disorders... and distinguished from the actual work of clinical psychologists and psychiatrists in the treatment of mental disorders (Reber and Reber p. 584). Although the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR [APA]. 2000) does not offer a definition for psychopathology, the meaning is implied in its definition of a mental disorder, which is defined "To make a distinction between "mental disorder and "physical disorder" (p. xxx). As Rashed (2013) points out, psychological disorders are based on both physical and psychological changes that include negative emotions and stress.

In the same way as psychopathology cannot be limited to one definition, according to Rashed (2013), "Culture is a complex and multifaceted concept", and it also cannot be limited to one definition. He presents several interpretations of culture"
• Culture is passed from community to individual (e.g. values, beliefs, religion, etc.) through transmissions such as language, custom, arts, and symbols.
• Culture is a dynamic attribution to perception, reasoning, interaction and behavior.
• It carries "meanings and significances" regarding through communications and expressions
On this basis, according to Rashed (2013), psychological disorders such as schizophrenia in India, or depression in Nigeria will be linked to epidemic proportions of schizophrenia and depression, respectively in those countries. Several other scholarly interpretations are also offered regarding how culture relates to psychopathology. Kinzie (1999) notes that culture can and does influence psychopathology.
