There are two general forms of representation - proportional and winner-take-all. There are some combinations of the two.
The proportional system assigns seats based on the proportion of votes that the party gets. It favors small parties because they actually have a chance (beyond a certain threshold) to get a few seats in the legislature.
The second is the American or English system, the "winner take all." In this case, there is a single election per district, and the winner is he with the most votes.
