Heat and temperature
8.00 grams of aluminum at 200 degrees Celsius and 18.0 grams of copper are dropped into 55.0 cubic centimeters of ethyl alcohol at 15 degrees Celsius. The temperature quickly comes to 24.0 degrees Celsius. What was the initial temperature of the copper in degrees Celsius?

mass of aluminum = m1= 8 g
mass of copper = m2= 18 g
volume of ethyl alcohol= 55 cc
density of ethyl alcohol= 0.789 g/cc
therefore mass of ethyl alcohol is= m3= 43.395 g =55*0.789
specific heat capacity of
Aluminum= 900 J/Kg/K or 0.9 J/g/K
Copper= 386 J/Kg/K or 0.386 J/g/K
Ethyl alcohol= 2430 J/Kg/K or 2.43 J/g/K
initial temperature
Aluminum= 200 degree C
Copper= ? T degree C
Ethyl alcohol= 15 degree C
final temperature= 24 degree C
Heat loss from Aluminum and Copper = Heat gain by Ethyl alcohol
or 8 x 0.9 x (200-24) + 18 x 0.386 x (T-24) = 43.395 x 2.43 x (24-15)
or Solving for T
T= -21.8 degree C
Answer: Temperature of Copper= -21.8 degree C
