Historical Development Pragmatism is an original American contribution to philosophy beginning from the end of the 19th century. Founded mainly to bring together the empirical tradition and the rational and idealist tradition, as mediation between science and philosophy. Began with the conviction that there must be a close connection between thought and action, and that thought must lead to action.
Analytic Philosophy developed in the 20th century as a result of a rejection of idealism, (especially its Hegelian form that was dominant then.) Based on new developments in logic, analytic philosophers began to lay emphasis on conceptual analysis of language.
