The diagram is in the word file attached.
Joe and Jill set sail from the same point, with Joe sailing in the direction of S4 degree east and Jill sailing in the direction S9 degree west. After 4 hr, Jill 2 mi due west of Joe. How far had Jill sailed?
Jill moves in the direction OA. Angle SOA=9 degrees
Joe moves in the direction OB. Angle SOB=4 degrees
We have to calculate OA the distance Jill has sailed.
After 4 hrs Jill is 2 miles due West of Joe. This means that AB=2 miles and angle OSA=angle OSB= 90 degrees
OA Cos 9 degrees= OB cos 4 degrees= OS
OB= OA x ( Cos 9/ Cos 4)= 0.99 OA
AB= AS+ BS
AS= OA Sin 9 degrees
BS= OB Sin 4 degrees= (0.99 OA ) Sin 4 degrees
AB= 2 miles =OA Sin 9 degrees + 0.99 OA Sin 4 degrees= 0.2255 OA
OA= 2/0.0255=8.86 miles
