Sound Intensity and Loudness
Not what you're looking for?
Part 1
"Loudness" is measured in decibels, DB. I = I0 * 10 DB/10 (also typed as I =I0*10^(DB/10)) gives the intensity, I, of sound, where I0 is the intensity of the threshold of sound, or the sound that can barely be perceived.
Using the library, web resources, and/or other materials, find the measure, in decibels, of a sound of you choice. Use the given formula to find out how many times louder than threshold of sound, the sound you have chosen is. Include the sound, its measure, and the calculations necessary to find the result.
Part 2
Is log(ab)=log(a) log(b) a true statement? Choose any positive values for a and b and then compute both sides of this equation. Does it appear that this is a true statement? Why? Show all calculations.
For Part 1 I've chosen the sound of a jet plane taking off (140 dB)
For Part 2 I've chosen the positive numbers of a=10 and b=20.
