The importance of changing marijuana policy is that it re-appropriates scarce resources that police need toward actual crimes that are serious and violent. The previous policy has resulted in police resources being overtaxed and used to arrest nonviolent marijuana users. Therefore, changing this policy will impact various areas throughout the criminal justice system wherein police will have more resources for the arrest and investigation of violent criminals, which positively impacts the community, prison populations, and jails. It also would positively impact the court system as the courts are also overflowing with drug cases such as marijuana offenses.
