Public perception is negatively affected. A very small proportion of Improper or excessive use of force actually happens but these are exaggerated in media. These distort the image of law enforcement in the minds of people. The courts have held that objective reasonableness should be applied before using deadly force. However, a single use of Improper or excessive use of force can sully the perception of police and break the trust of the community. If such negative perceptions are avoided there can be better collaboration between law enforcement and the community leading to improved law and order.
