- The Aztecs who ruled what is now middle and southern Mexico from the 1400's to the 1500's AD looked to their environment to survive and develop their civilization. While in the beginning most were hunter-gatherers, they eventually domesticated animals and developed an agricultural system that allowed them to grow crops in swampy as well as desert-like and arid areas, spaces that would normally not be suitable to agriculture. They called these drained fields chinampas, mixing irrigation in arid areas with proper drainage in swampy areas. On the hills, ...
