Title Slide: Fictionland Minority Profiling: Issues, Goals, Resolution & Evaluation

Slide 1

Title: Overview of the Issue

Text: A growing town, Fictionland is facing the problem of a police department perceived to use racial profiling in its bid to keep crime down. Town growth over the decades has seen the town become increasingly multicultural, ethnically diverse (25% of its population is made up of races other than White) and complaints have been filed against racially discriminative practices by the police department over the years. Each time, the Internal Affairs of FPD would investigate and their investigation yielded results of no wrongdoing. A whistleblower however has managed to surface a tape wherein an FPD Officer, Tim Smith was shown making judgments based on race and doing so, acted in an aggressive and discriminative manner against one Antoine Jones who, being black, was profiled by Smith as a 'crack dealer' because Jones was driving a nice car. Jones was stopped, and while he complied with police requests underwent police brutality where Smith peppered sprayed him without provocation. The video evidence is contrary to what Smith claimed where he said Jones swung at him and he only acted in self defence. The minority population of the town distrust the police department creating tension in the community.
