What happened at Watergate was an illegal break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters, which was known as the Watergate complex. The operatives who broke into the building were discovered by a security guard, who alerted the police, and their subsequent arrest set in place the chain of events that would end with the resignation of the presidency by President Nixon. After an extensive investigation by the FBI, there was a link discovered between the burglars and someone named E Howard Hunt, who happened to be associated with a covert Nixon program named CREEP. Hunt was paid by Charles Colson, the special counsel for president Nixon, and this led to the White House seeking to cover up their connections to the break-in. Although Nixon did not order the break-in, he did orchestrate the subsequent cover-up, and this is what led to the president eventually be forced to resign.
