Why is Hildegard of Bingen an important figure in early Christian mysticism?
Hildegard of Bingen is an important figure with regard to her unique contributions to flowering of Christian Mysticism, during the High Middle Ages. Hildegard further developed the medieval mystical idea "the bride of Christ," and she developed a very personal and intimate style of seeking oneness with God. Her mystical writings stress the centrality of the bible to understanding a personal union with God. The Bible was center of her intellectual universe, as she stood at the opposite from more classically inspired Catholicism of the Scholastics, such as the later Dominican Thomas Aquinas.
