The Mongol legacy continued well after the end of the "foreign" Mongol Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). The successive dynasty of the "native Chinese" Ming dynasty (1368-1644) saw the ruling dynasty in some ways build upon the Mongol legacy and in other ways consciously distance themselves from it. The Ming rulers continued the Yuan practice of issuing multilingual edicts to demonstrate their universal imperial claim. However, Chinese was restored as the (unofficial) imperial language, when it had been one of many imperial languages under then Mongolian Yuan dynasty.
