ASSIGNMENT

The purpose of the research paper is to enable students to develop and refine their research and writing skills in the practice of management. Students will select a health services topic of interest to research and prepare a 5-10 page (excluding cover page and reference list; no abstract required) research paper. This paper will provide a brief review of the literature on the topic and articulates either a statement of problem or opportunity in health services administration. The literature review will include at least one source that provides empirical evidence that the proposed health administration problem or opportunity is substantial in the field. Appropriate sources include published books, articles in peer reviewed journals, or first-tier print media. The final paper must be typed (1 inch margins/10-12 point font), double-spaced, and follow Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed. (APA) format. title page, abstract, introduction, literature review / sources, discussion & conclusion. The intent is that the paper is informational in nature (no research required).

Social determinants of health have been identified by several public health

organizations worldwide, I believe that it is one of greatest influences over the health and

welfare of individuals of varying socio-economic statuses. These are the conditions in

which people live that determines whether they stay healthy or become ill and are largely

shaped by the social distribution of resources such as money and power at all levels.

These determinants are greatly responsible for the avoidable health inequities

realized between countries, regions and even areas within the same city and even though

life expectancies have improved over the past century, noticeable differences remain in

the life expectancies of people with varying levels of education and income, occupations

and among those socially classified as 'underprivileged'. Two goals of the US

Department of Health's initiative, "Healthy People in 2010" are to "increase the quality

and years of healthy life," and to "eliminate health disparities." The DOH states that

health organizations will need to employ aspects of improving health, education, housing,

labor, justice, transportation, agriculture and the environment if strides toward the

elimination of these disparities are to be made.

You have made a good start. One approach to help you with an essay assignment like this one is to look at other research information to consider for the rest of your paper. This keeps within the BrainMass policy that does not allow OTAs to complete papers for students. This should be fairly easy to take it to the next step.

Although you mentioned it is an informational paper and no research is necessary, the assignment clearly asks for research: It says to include "at least one source that provides empirical evidence that the proposed health administration problem or opportunity is substantial in the field. Appropriate sources include published books, articles in peer reviewed journals, or first-tier print media. The final paper must be typed (1 inch margins/10-12 point font), double-spaced, and follow Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed. (APA) format." This is my understanding of the assignment, so I provided references so you can look up the sources. I also provided a sample APA paper to refer to for format.

RESPONSE:

Known social health determinant interact to affect the health of individuals and communities, which are determined by a person's environment and circumstances, such as "where we live, the state of our environment, genetics, our income and education level, and our relationships with friends and family all have considerable impacts on health, whereas the more commonly considered factors such as access and use of health care services often have less of an impact" (WHO, 2010).

Research suggests that there are three broad areas of health determinants that have the most impact of the overall health of the person and community including: "the social and economic environment, the physical environment, and the person's individual characteristics and behaviours (WHO, 2010). Research needs to address these areas, such as Healthy People 2010 is presently doing.

Interestingly, even though it is, to a large extent, the context of people's lives that determine one's health status, it is still common to blame the person for either "poor health or crediting them for good health" (WHO, 2010). This is therefore inappropriate. Although there are some health factors that an individual can control (i.e. how much they eat, how much they exercise, etc.), there are many other social ans economic determinants of health that people cannot control which need to be addressed at the macro level. According to WHO (2010), for example, some of these uncontrollable factors of health districts to address include the following:

? Income and social status - higher income and social status are linked to better health. The greater the gap between the richest ...
