Solution Summary
The discussion in this work focuses on the appropriate application of quantitative research study designs for various applications in health research, with examples.
Solution Preview
There are four main quantitative research designs: Descriptive; Correlation, Quasi-experimental; and experimental.
Bipolar Disorder
A mental health disorder is often diagnosed using the guidelines prescribed in the DSM-V manual. A descriptive design seeks to understand a situation or phenomenon, so there is no hypothesis formed prior to conducting research. The researcher may use techniques such as personal interview or observation to make conclusions about how a particular therapy affects people diagnosed with bipolar disorder, for example.
A different researcher may want to evaluate the effectiveness of a medication, in controlling the symptoms of BPD. The researcher could assess severity of symptoms, apply a control and treatment group (with a new medication being given to the randomly selected treatment group members), then reassess for symptoms, using a measurement scale. Statistical evaluation is then used to determine a cause and effect relationship between taking the medication and decreased severity of symptoms, in a quasi experimental design.
In a correlation study, the researcher may want to investigate whether a correlation exists between two variables. For instance, the researcher may want to know if a correlation exists between diagnosis of BPD and body ...
