A controlled substance is generally defined as a drug that is regulated by the government. Schedule 1 consists of drugs like cocaine, marijuana, and LSD. Schedule II consists of drugs like OxyContin, and Percocet. Schedule III consists of drugs like Vicodin. Schedule IV consists of drugs like Xanax, Ativan, Ambien and Lunesta. Schedule V consists of drugs like Robitussin A-C and Lyrica. Controlled substances are more heavily regulated because of their dangers, i.e. side-effects, possibility of overdose, and the potential for dependence.
