The information exchange procedure for a local hospital in northeastern North Carolina is based on a hierarchy system in many respects, but in many situations the system becomes autocratic, due to the changing needs of various emergency situations. In essence, the exchange procedure within this hospital can best be described as a chain network, in which information and directives are passed along in a top-down fashion, so the information is basically developed and processed by upper-level management, to be passed down along this chain from mid to lower level management, and to the various departments within the organization.
