Dr. Kermit Gosnell was found guilty of murder of three newborns and of involuntary manslaughter in the drug-overdose death of a patient who had undergone an abortion. Dr. Gosnell ran an abortion clinic in Philadelphia where he routinely ran late-term abortions. Late term abortions are abortions performed during the third trimester of gestation usually 27 weeks (Gans Epner, Jonas, & Seckinger, 1998). There are two commonly used techniques: one involves a partial birth (once the head is out, the doctor will suction the spinal fluid and brain of the fetus and the other one the fetus is dismembered inside the uterus before being born (Davis, O'Brien, & Reed, 2001). In the state of Pennsylvania, it is illegal to perform late term abortion past 24-week (Davis, O'Brien, & Reed, 2001). Dr. Gosnell was found guilty of murder because he would deliver live babies and then proceed to break the spine to kill them. Clinic employees would also kill the babies if required.
